SMYTHSON – REWIRED EP

Smythson kicks off new label Abstract Reasoning, with a whole lot of promise from this new imprint and producer displayed in this first outing.

Rewired is supremely subtle slice of deep, stripped back tech propelled by throbbing kick and bass combos and gently urgent percussion. Muted chords add texture deep in the mix, and a graceful, swaying piano motif unexpectedly cuts through to create a melancholic mood. The emotion is understated as the twinkling ivories move through delay and panning effects to give the semblance of a remembered dream. Little else is needed to make this track a captivating, hypnotic ride.

Eduardo De La Calle has really impressed with his recent releases on Carl Craig’s Planet E, Biotop, Nitsa Traxx, Forbidden Colors and many other labels across the last year. He takes inspiration from piano motif, pairing it with a filtered down synth chord progression that adds another succinct layer of emotion to the track. Next he unleashes a sustained string line and soft stabs as the track builds through layers of delicate yet driving percussion. A warm, gurgling acid line tops of the pared back yet deeply sensual rework.

Belgium’s Hermanez has long since been an impressive force with prolific output everywhere from Suara to Trapez LTD to Leena and Monique Musique. His deep, mystical version builds through hip-shaking percussion and swathes of dubby pads moving across the stereo field. Delays are used to great effect for both percussion and synths, creating a feel that’s reminiscent of late ‘90s progressive house but with a deeper and more groovy touch.
