about

ARR02
Abstract Reasoning makes its mark with this excellent second release from Rocambolesco, complete with a tasty remix from the ever-dependable Alexkid.

Signals takes you on a trip across nine minutes of deep exploration. The intricate percussive groove is a patchwork of slight drum sounds and slivers of FX, with seriously low tuned bass warming the underbelly of the track. Dusty, filtered synth stabs nip away at the track as far-off piano notes delay in the background. Alexkid injects it with ominous bass growls and garage snare inflexions on his remix, throwing in a few more kicks for extra measure to create a breakbeaty rhythm. Coming across like Burial meets ar:pi:ar, it’s an absolute beast of a rework.

Divorces is a hazy concoction that imperceptibly builds through undulating, dubby bass tones, the slightest of pad sounds floating in the background and wide-panned percussion. Hypnotic, indecipherable snippets of speech punctuate the watery groove before distorted electric piano notes permeate the depths. A sinister two-note melody breathes some tangible tension into proceedings, but is not left to linger too long. It’s all about those wobbling sub layers that suck you in deeper and envelop your senses.

The Rocambolesco Instrumental of Divorces is driven by the laconic funk of a cool bass groove which plays brilliantly against the filtering and phasing step sequenced pad that sits atop. Sprightly swung percussion gives the track a decided pep in its step while a twanging, morphing synth hook elevates the funk further. In an understated way, it’s pretty uplifting stuff thanks to its solid melodic feel.
